News from Geoff Bonus July 2010
Hi All NSW Sydney 38 Owners
First of all best of luck and fair sailing to Swish,
Eleni, The Goat, J Steel and Zen for the Sydney Gold Coast yacht race starting
tomorrow. The forecast and routing shows that this could be a small boat yacht
race so do not be suprised if you see a 38 on the podium, as per the 2009
Hobart race. Staying ahead of the Archie 31 with the Tow Truck boys on board
may be the big challenge.

Acuity dominates at Line 7 Sydney 38 Australian Championships
Mon, 2 Mar 2009
The Tony Walls helmed 'Acuity' lived up to their name and proved to be the sharpest and keenest of Australia’s Sydney 38 Class by dominating the Line 7 Australian Sydney 38 Championships over the past three days.
Sailed on the Manly Circle in predominately light conditions which never blew more than 14 knots the whole regatta, Acuity was in devastating form throughout and won five of the eight races with their worst place finish being a forth in the strong thirteen boat fleet.
Late last night, the Acuity party was still kicking on in downtown Manly after Tony Walls and his team had accepted the Australian Championship Trophy at the host Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. There are sure to be a few sore heads this morning within Team Acuity!
The victory came after this team has campaigned in the class for the past five years with some great results, however this was the year where they left no stone unturned.
Acuity beat off a late charge by the Chris Way helmed 'Easy Tiger' who made a last ditch effort to try to win the regatta in the last race by match racing Acuity in the pre-start and holding them out past the pin end of the line before going on to win the final race. However with Olympic Gold Medalist Mal Page calling tactics on Acuity, cool heads prevailed and they managed to catch up to forth place to win the regatta.
Tony was quick to heap praise on his strong loyal team which also included- Roger Perret, Paul 'Junior' Gudmunson, Andrew Toon, Sam Davidson, Jason Greenway, Justin Lambeth and Chris Dawson.
Both Justin (former owner of 'London Tavern') and Chris (owner of 'Eye Candy') enjoyed being a part of the campaign and mentioned that it was the cheapest victory of their sailing careers!
Further in the pack, Alan and Thomas Quick’s 'Outlaw' with Steve McConaghy calling tactics came back from a slow start to beat Geoff Bonus into third place in the Line 7 Australian Sydney 38 Championships which has been hailed the 'Friendly Regatta' with all competitors enjoying a great social program after racing each day.
In addition there were some great prizes on offer from regatta sponsors, Line 7 & Sydney Yachts which meant that not too many competitors left empty handed.
A special mention to the interstate competitors who traveled from Melbourne - Australian sailing legend, Lou Abrahams and his 'Challenge' crew and Ian Murray and his team on 'Cinquante' who provided great competition for the Sydney crews whilst adding to the flavour of what was a great regatta.
